The family favourite apple
The Gala was created in the 1930s by New Zealand horticulturist J.H. Kidd, crossing Kidd's Orange Red with Golden Delicious. However, it was not until the 1960s that its worldwide commercialisation began.
From New Zealand to France: an apple that conquered the world with its sweetness and attractive colour.
Today it is one of the most widely grown varieties in the world. In France, it is mainly cultivated in the Loire Valley and the south-west, where the temperate climate allows it to develop its characteristic red colour on a yellow background.
Gala is the second most widely grown apple variety in the world, just behind Golden Delicious.
Its name "Gala" was chosen because it was considered worthy of a gala event for its beauty and flavour.
It is naturally sweet with very little acidity, making it ideal for children and as a healthy snack.
